OPTION 9

A brand-new pathway to certification approved by our local legislature. With this option, you can earn your bachelor’s degree and initial teacher certification in just three years. What’s unique about Option 9 is that you can start without already have a bachelor’s degree, making it a fantastic choice for those eager to work in our school district. Plus, you’ll be gaining valuable experience in a non-teaching role while pursuing your teacher certification.

REQUIREMENTS TO BE AN OPTION 9 CANDIDATE

  • Have an offer of classified employment from Nelson County Schools

  • High School Diploma/GED

  • Application filled out and approved by Nelson County District Personnel

  • Acceptance Letter from partnering College/University (upon acceptance into the option 9 program in Nelson County Schools, employee will apply for option 9 program at a partnering university). 

  • Have a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or higher, or a 3.0 or higher of the last 30 hours completed

  • Successful completion of one of the following or combination of assessments 

    • ACT with a composite score of 22 or the corresponding minimums scores:

      • Reading: 20

      • Writing: 18

      • Math: 19

    • PRAXIS Core Academic Skills for Educators (CASE)

      • Reading (5713): 156

      • Writing (5723): 162

      • Mathematics (5733): 150

FAQ

  • Yes, but candidates must meet the requirements to be an Option 9 candidate. See above information.

  • Candidates receive their initial teacher certification upon completing their bachelor’s degree and meeting the assessment requirements.

  • No, candidates in the Option 9 program are not eligible to receive a temporary provisional certification, these require a minimum of a bachelor’ degree. During the program, candidates will serve in a classified role and will be working in different classrooms as well as their classified role throughout the duration of the program.

  • Each candidate is paired with an experienced teacher mentor who guides them through observations and ??? throughout the program. Additionally, the local administrative team and coordinator are there to provide continuous support. Your journey in the program is backed by a dedicated team to ensure your success.

  • The cost of the Option 9 program varies based on the partnering university that candidate chooses to attend. It’s important to note that candidates are expected to cover the expenses themselves, as the district will not be financially responsible for any candidate in the Option 9 program. Be sure to check with your chosen university for specific cost details.
