OH BABY! WE ARE SO
EXCITED FOR YOU.

Maternity leave refers to the period of time that a new mother takes off from work following the birth or adoption of a baby. Maternity leave can be created from a variety of benefits that include sick leave, vacation, holiday time, personal days, short-term disability and unpaid family medical leave time. It is important to plan your maternity leave so that you and your family do not experience any unexpected financial challenges and you can make the most of your time with your baby.

REQUESTING MATERNITY LEAVE IS JUST AS EASY AS A COUPLE OF CLICKS.

To request Maternity Leave, you will need to log into your TalentEd account and request Family Medical Leave. Once that request comes to the central office, the central office will provide you forms in your TalentEd account, which you will take to your physician, for them to complete.

The completed and signed FMLA FORMS-EMPLOYEE (for Employee's Serious Health Condition) or FMLA FORMS-FAMILY MEMBER (For Family Member's Serious Health Condition) will need to be returned to the central office in advance of your leave.

As a reminder, FMLA time is unpaid leave. You may use any accumulated sick time while you are out (up to 30 days), as per the Nelson County Board Sick Leave Policy for CERTIFIED PERSONNEL and CLASSIFIED PERSONNEL.

Short Term Disability is a voluntary benefit offered through Houchens Insurance Group, and administered by Mutual of Omaha. You may be eligible for short term disability if you enrolled in a short term disability plan when enrolling in voluntary benefits. Employees can call Mutual of Omaha at 1-800-877-5176 to start the claims process. For more information on short term disability please review the Short-Term Disability Guide.

When taking leave, you will work with your principal related to finding a long term substitute, and he/she can reach out to us for support if needed.

Please be sure to add your baby to your health insurance plan. If you have insurance through the Nelson County Board of Education, you have 35 days from the birth or adoption of your baby to add the baby to your insurance plan. State insurance plans also require something from the hospital to prove birth. The footprint card from the hospital is an acceptable form of proof, as long as it lists the date of birth and parents names. Please complete and submit the 2025 EMPLOYEE BENEFITS ENROLLMENT CHANGE FORM, within 30 days from the date of birth or adoption to add the baby to your insurance.
